OSHA Investigates Fatal New York Workplace Accident

The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is looking into the death of a worker in Maine, according to NewsDay.com. Josh Plante, 44, from Maine, was working was a lineman for Hawkeye LLC in Saco, Maine, descending on a utility pole when he fell nearly 50 feet to his death. Plante died from his injuries on his way to the hospital, according to Don Rassiger, counsel for Hawkeye LLC. Ted Fitzgerald, OSHA spokesman, said the cause of the accident is undetermined but Hawkeye is cooperating with the investigation. Plante was wearing the required safety harness at the time of the fall. Hawkeye is a contractor that does work for power companies all over the Northeast. OSHA Cites Federal Facility for 19 Violations

The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued 19 citations following an inspection at St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Health Care System in St. Cloud, Minnesota, in July of 2011, according to OHSOnline.com. The inspection was part of OSHA’s Federal Agency Targeting Inspection Program. “The St. Cloud Veterans Affairs Health Care System failed to properly ensure the facility was in compliance with established safety and health procedures,” says OSHA Director Mark Hysell. “All employers, including federal employers, are responsible for knowing what hazards exist in their facilities and must take appropriate precautions by following OSHA standards so workers are not exposed to such risks.” Eight of the citations were repeat offenses—failing to provide guardrails to open-sided platforms, keep exit routes free and unobstructed, evaluate the workplace to determine if permit-required confined spaces were present, implement and train workers in lockout procedures to control hazardous energy, provide training…

Cleveland Worker Injured After Crane Collapse

A Cleveland Public Power worker was rushed to the hospital on January 19 after a workplace injury, according to Fox News in Cleveland. The worker—who was not identified—fell off a basket crane just after 3 a.m. near Interstate 90. According to a spokesman from the Cleveland Police Department, the man was working on a cherry picker when it tipped over. The bottom became unstable and fell over. Paramedics rushed the injured worker to MetroHealth Medical Center. Reports indicate that he suffered a broken wrist and lacerations. The highway was shut down for several hours in the eastbound direction. The reality is that this worker is lucky to have survived. Basket cranes and cherry pickers are supposed to be staked into the ground when in use. The reason for it tipping is unclear, but Cleveland Public Power can expect an investigation into the accident.
