OSHA Cites Food Manufacturer Following Worker Fatality

A worker at a food processing plant in Massachusetts was killed in a fatal workplace accident last year, according to sources. Daniel Collazo Torres was crushed on December 16, 2011 while cleaning a machine used to manufacture hummus. Officials from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration  (OSHA) inspected the Tribe Mediterranean Foods, Inc. facility in Boston and cited nearly 20 safety violations. Violations included a failure to conduct inspections, a repeat violation for this company. OSHA placed Tribe Mediterranean Foods on its Severe Violator Enforcement Program, meaning it will be subject to frequent unannounced inspections in the future. Perrysburg Based Company Faces OSHA Fines

The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited a Perrysburg-based company for multiple safety violations, according to WSLS NBC News 10 in West Virginia. Trans Tech Logistics, Inc. is a transportation company that has facilities in West Virginia. OSHA investigators inspected two Trans Tech facilities and cited 17 serious safety violations. One of the facilities is located in Natrium, the other in Institute. OSHA cited the facility in Natrium with 15 violations, including failure to have shutoff protection in place for machinery. The Institute facility received citations for using “unsafe” trucks and exposing workers to corrosive materials. The proposed fines total $69,000. Trans Tech has 15 days to agree to pay the fines or request a hearing with OSHA. According to OSHA, there were 4,690 worker fatalities in 2010. OSHA Fines Facility for Exposing Workers to Hazardous Chemicals

Flex-N-Gate, an Illinois-based manufacturer operating as Guardian West in Urbana, may be facing federal fines for violating safety standards, according to News4Jax.com. The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) claims that Guardian West failed to monitor employees who may have been exposed to harmful chemicals, such as nickel, chromium, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. OSHA officials inspected the facility in December of 2011. Proposed fines total $57,000. Flex-N-Gate’s owner, Shahid Khan, also owns the NFL team, the Jacksonville Jaguars. “Employers such as Guardian West are responsible for knowing the hazards that exist in their manufacturing plants and taking the necessary procedures to ensure that workers are monitored for exposure to potentially harmful substances,” said OSHA area director Tom Bielema. “OSHA is committed to protecting workers on the job, especially when employers fail to do so.” OSHA takes these types of violations very seriously, as well it…
